Starting a new leadership role is always exhilarating; you're learning new things, meeting new people, and making progress toward ambitious goals. But what happens when that initial buzz fades? Are you still climbing, or have you hit a plateau without realizing it? One of the hardest parts (and I believe the most important part) is recognising the difference between peaking and plateauing.
In the first stages of a new leadership role, it's normal to experience a boost – a feeling that you're excelling and moving up quickly. This "peak" period is marked by rapid growth and visible achievements that will often boost your confidence and inspire you to progress further. But these early wins can sometimes create a false sense of momentum and improvement that won't necessarily remain!
Signs of a Plateau
If you're no longer feeling that rush of development and instead feel like you're just keeping your head about water, you may have hit a plateau. Some common signs include:
– Your responsibilities or projects are no longer challenging or exciting.
– You're not as motivated to take on new projects.
– Instead of stepping out of your comfort zone, you find yourself sticking to what's familiar.
Plateauing doesn't mean you're failing, but it does signal a need for change to keep moving forward in your career and that you need to take action for the sake of your career confidence and happiness.
How do I move from plateauing to peaking?
Set new goals
Instead of just 'doing the job', think about what steps would make you more competitive, knowledgeable, or influential. Goals like "becoming a thought leader in my sector" or "leading a major project" create the momentum to move forward and can help to boost your excitement for your everyday role.
Seek Feedback
Look for mentors or colleagues who can guide you, offer constructive feedback, and push you to challenge yourself. Sometimes an outside perspective is what you need to see new opportunities, solutions or to simply keep you accountable.
Strategy 3: Continuously Develop Your Skillset
Learn new skills
Whether it's a new qualification, a task outside of your comfort zone, or simply working with a more experienced peer, continuously updating your skill set helps you stand out as someone committed to growth. This will not only help you be viewed more favourably when it comes to promotion, but it will also help you to feel prouder of yourself, and believe that there is still more that you can still accomplish.
Embracing the Leadership Journey
It's perfectly normal to hit plateaus in your career, but as a leader, your goal is to recognise them early and take proactive steps! Remember, the leadership journey is not an easy one and is often filled with ups and downs. But by learning to deal with both, you'll stay on the right path for you to succeed!
