How to actually achieve your career goal

In today’s evolving professional landscape, where futurists predict multiple career shifts throughout a lifetime, why do so many people grapple with initiating change?

A common trend among those I work with involves falling into a career path in their twenties and eventually outgrowing it. It’s only natural; we evolve over time, our interests shift, values change, and skills develop. How can a career chosen at 22 be expected to seamlessly fit at 32, 42, or 52?

Moreover, the ever-growing multitude of emerging professions and different work arrangements opens doors that didn’t exist when initial career choices were made; especially post Covid. The potential for change is ripe; the challenge lies in transforming the desire for change into actionable steps.

Here’s how to transform your desire to change careers into a tangible reality:

1. Set Clear Goals

Begin by transforming your desire into a well-defined goal. Reflect on the past year and plan for the upcoming one. Consider conducting a 5-minute Career Review to set the stage.

2. Craft Effective Goals

Not all goals are created equal. Different types of goals can motivate you differently:

·         Distal and Proximal Goals: Distal goals are visionary, long-term aspirations, while proximal goals are detailed, short-term actions to propel you towards the long-term vision. Combining both is often effective.

·         Abstract and Concrete Goals: Abstract goals are less defined and can help when clarity on a new career is lacking. Concrete goals, specific and detailed, come into play as your vision solidifies.

·         Avoidance and Approach Goals: Moving away from something (avoidance goals) can differ vastly from moving towards something (approach goals), impacting your motivation and well-being.

Ensure your goals align with your values, reflecting who you are and what matters to you.

3. Embrace Hope

Hope plays a vital role in achieving goals. Rob Snyder’s Hope Theory emphasises having a goal, pathways to achieve it, and self-belief in reaching that goal. Assess whether you have all of these elements in place.

4. Be Ready for Change

No matter how well-crafted your goals are, readiness for change is crucial. Assess your commitment — are you merely contemplating change or actively taking steps like researching options or seeking guidance?

5. Make This Year Your Year of Transformation

Put on your goal-setting hat, align your goals with your values, boost your motivation for change, and make this year the one where you realise your resolution to change your career!
