What is the first thing I should do to secure my first Senior Leadership Role?

Ask yourself – What kind of leader do I want to be? Getting clear about your own leadership brand will help you make good decisions about your next role and organisation. Culturally they need to be aligned with who you want to be as a leader. You want your choice of role and place to work to allow you to feel supported as you grow as a leader.

Next, it’s important to engage in some deep self-reflection. Identify your strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth. Think about and pick out skills that align with the expectations of senior leadership roles. Notice if there are any gaps to fill. This self-awareness will serve as the foundation for your strategic roadmap and career progression success.

Why are my connections important?

Be clear about who you need to build relationships with both internally and externally so you can be strategic about your connections. Establishing meaningful connections helps raise your visibility and create relationships that can support or help your career when you when you need it. These positive relationships with mentors can provide guidance and insights into the subtle nuances of senior leadership roles as well as increase your industry and sector knowledge.

What do I need to do to stand out?

Elevating your career to a senior leadership level needs a commitment to continuous learning and professional development. There may be relevant courses or training that will enhance your leadership skills, strategic thinking, and decision-making abilities. But it’s also spotting opportunities to gain additional experience or exposure that you don’t get in your day job. This could be things like representing your company at an event, speaking at a conference, or writing a White paper. Staying ahead of industry trends and innovations and positioning yourself as a thought leader in your field is a tip that will definitely make you stand out!

What’s my career goal?

Set yourself clear and achievable career goals, keeping in mind the gaps you identified earlier. Break down these goals into smaller, more manageable milestones that contribute to your overall career progression and goals. By setting these sub-goals you’ll always have something to aim for which is going to progress you one step closer to your first senior leadership role, whilst also keeping you motivated and positive in the process.

Be realistic though as finding time to focus on your development and/or job search can be challenging when you have a busy job and home life.
