Crafting Gravitas: Redefining Professional Presence

In the quest for professional development, a term that often comes up is “gravitas”.

Traditionally it is described as ‘a blend of dignity, seriousness, and a commanding presence’. However, this description fails to capture the depth and individuality that gravitas embodies and quite simply feels too ‘heavy’ for me!

So, what does gravitas truly mean to you?

For me, I believe that it is a personal journey; a mixture of confidence, assuredness, and an aura that evokes respect and trust. What does it mean for you?

I believe you can make your own definition.

To do so, begin with introspection and define your personal understanding of gravitas. Consider individuals you admire for their commanding presence

  • What sets them apart?

  • Is it their unwavering confidence, their poised demeanour, or their compelling communication style?

Observation becomes a valuable teacher.

Now, by keenly observing those who possess gravitas, you unveil traits and behaviours that resonate with your career goals. However, the goal isn’t to simply emulate others but rather think about the strengths and integration of these traits and consider how you can incorporate them into your unique leadership style.

Developing gravitas demands conscious effort.

One thing I definitely recommend, before you head into important meetings or conversations, is to set intentions about how you want to portray yourself and develop your gravitas. How do you wish to come across to the other person? How do you want to be seen in this situation? Allow these intentions to guide your actions, refining your approach with practice and over time.

Reflection becomes your ally.

Assess your performance at the end of the day or after important conversations or meetings. Did your behaviour exude the gravitas you aimed for? Learn from each experience and continuously refine your approach. Don’t be afraid of seeking feedback as it can offer valuable perspectives, aiding in your personal and professional growth.

But, beware of self-sabotage. Unwittingly, you may diminish your own presence through your own language habits. Small phrases like “just,” “actually,” or “kind of” may soften your message, diluting your impact. Challenge yourself to speak assertively, without unnecessary disclaimers that undercut your authority.

And don’t forget that, the audibility of your voice holds immense power. The tone and the certainty in your speech contribute significantly to your gravitas.

Experiment with pitch and tone, recording yourself to gauge your impact (even when this is uncomfortable!). Embrace the use of “I” to assert your standpoint and position your statements confidently.

Gravitas isn’t a fixed destination but something we all should practise continually. Continuously refine your approach, aligning it with your evolving definition of this important and sought after quality.

As you weave gravitas into your professional life, remember, it’s not about imitation but about highlighting the most unique elements of you.
